THE STORY BEHIND THE HAND-DRAWN DESIGN

Depicted in this print scene are two special water birds found in the mangrove estuaries of south Florida: the great white heron and the anhinga.

Great white herons (Ardea herodias occidentalis) are a unique subspecies of the great blue heron, distinguished by their all-white plumage. Native to southern Florida they are most commonly found in coastal wetlands, mangroves, and shallow waters. These wading birds are skilled hunters, feeding on fish, crustaceans, and other small aquatic animals. Due to habitat loss and environmental changes, their populations are considered vulnerable.

The anhinga (Anhinga anhinga), often called the "snakebird," is a distinctive water bird found in fresh and brackish water wetlands of the southeastern United States. It is known for its long, slender neck, which it uses to spear fish while swimming almost entirely submerged. Unlike many water birds, its feathers are not waterproof, requiring it to perch and spread its wings to dry after diving.

Both these water birds are impressive fishermen: observant, patient, and skilled when catching fish.
